that was a very personal shot from harry reid. is it accurate to say, open question, that speaker boehner is worried about staying speaker? >> yes. he's definitely -- i think he's not worried about his election on january 3rd, but that's not the end of it. you know, i think he's worried about his speakership every day he's speaker -- >> do you agree with that, he's worried he may be losing out or being thrown out of the speakership by his own party? >> for sure. he spent the first two years of his speakership looking over his shoulder as the camera shows of eric cantor right behind him ready -- >> but cantor is with him now, isn't he? hasn't his number two guy joined him? >> he's his number two guy and supporter, but he's the spiritual leader of the tea party caucus there, and that's the group that seems to be calling the shots right now in the house of representatives. >> let's talk about the republican party. let's try to be really analytical here. you know, to me two things happen in every election. one, somebody wins, somebody

asking harry reid to ask and president obama to act. >> harry reid's his lifeline. let me ask you this. everybody watches politics. this isn't cnbc here, it's politics. let's get a couple things straight. you say right now that today it's a democratic advantage. obama looks like the guy is trying to get it done. republicans are the holdouts. >> it's not just me. look at the gallup reports. republicans have been going down. >> obama's 54%. right now it's a democratic advantage. >> democratic advantage right now. >> midnight monday still a democratic advantage? >> no. if you go over the cliff, everyone's in trouble. >> wednesday morning next week which is only a week away and we're into 2013 and no deal's been made, do you accept the fact that both guys are in trouble? >> i think it's a jump ball. i'm not sure what happens at that point. it depends on what the markets do. we'll say this. president obama doesn't have to worry as much as the members of congress do because he's not on the ballot again. >> but if there's a second recession, doesn't that kill his second te

so joining me, i think we still have joy ann reid from the grio. i want to ask you if you're still there about the comments that -- i'll just read them out from harry reid, the senate majority leader. he said there was a long meeting at the white house, it was very constructive. we hope it will bear fruit but that's what we hope to learn. he said i think the next 24 hours will be tre instructive as to what we're able to accomplish. we talked about a lot of things. there's no concrete proposal at this time he said. we have a number of different directions we're going it try to take and we're going to see what can be worked out. joy, if they're talking like this in vague terms, does this make us feel like there's something going on? i mean, obviously there's a communication there, but without a concrete proposals, how quickly can they turn this around? >> well, you know what, richard, i think this could be john boehner learning the lesson of not to put out any specifics he can't deliver on. we were just talking about that before. he's been burned bef

so if harry reid and mr. mcconnell can't come up with something, then you've got barack obama's proposal. >> joy, even before it gets to the house republicans, there are plenty of republicans in the senate who can mess this up, right? even if mcconnell and reid have a deal, there's no guarantee that there isn't a single tea party-backed senator. >> well, i mean, at the end of the day, look, mitch mcconnell is a much better leader of his caucus. and mcconnell has really controlled the leaders. the fact that he's meeting with harry reid means there probably isn't going to be a filibuster. i'll find that very surprising. the problem is that never have we seen, not in my lifetime, a weaker speaker of the house of representative than john boehner. john boehner has essentially thrown up his hands and walked away from this process. he's walked away from the constitutional mandate that senate and tax bills come from the house, not the senate. and he's said you guys pass something. they were going to pass something. i

. >> we've heard that he reached out to harry reid and nancy pelosi and he spoke with them about everything that was going to take place tonight. what else do we know with how he responded to what's happening? >> well, it's interesting. the president chose today to have one of those campaign-style events with ordinary americans in the white house and an auditorium in the white house compound today. the president sort of came out in a jovial, joking matter. he painted a picture of a deal that was all but done, but he got in a lot of jabs, subtle and otherwise, at republicans and really angered folks. john mccain said he didn't know whether he was sad or angered by what the president had said. cooler heads have obviously prevailed here. and we do know that the president had been on the phone working this, even though joe biden was sort of the front man, flying point, if you will. and negotiations with mitch mcconnell. so, sure, the president has been very involved. he, you know, he has led this campaign style effort to try to force republicans' hand. again, many of those folks are a little bi

people involved in these negotiations, the president continues to be involved, majority leader harry reid continues to be involved. i'm told he has spoken to the president several times today. so the hope is though that they really will be able to at this point because they are so close to move this forward. but, again, that remains a big question mark. president obama, of course, today had that sort of campaign-style event. he has waged this public campaign to pressure congress, not only republicans, but also democrats who have expressed some skepticism about this emerging deal that is coming together. so that is part of the president's tactic as well, to not only be working the phones behind the scenes, but also to hold these public events and, of course, he sat down with david gregory this weekend on quths meet the press." that's part of his calculation as well. >> let's talk more about the political calculation. for more reaction i'm joined by nbc's luke russert. good to see you, luke. >> how are you doing? >> i want to pick up on what mike was saying, even as we were on the air house
